Jay Gordon’s work had consistently impressed me, especially the Pumpkinhead poster he had created a few years prior. The title he was most passionate about tackling was Ari Aster’s modern horror masterpiece Midsommar.
The concept was nailed down well from the start, with Jay having a clear vision where he wanted to take the piece. While he was initially concerned about how many colors to use, knowing it would be screenprinted (where more colors is more expensive)—I encouraged him to just let loose. It seemed to me the best version of the piece would embrace color, rather than shy away from it.
We spent quite a while fine-tuning this one. I held Jay to a high standard, requesting multiple passes on Dani’s likeness, brightness tweaks to the wood engravings, more detailing on certain flowers/leaves, and surely a myriad of other things in pursuit of perfection. He stuck it through to the end with me, patiently channeling all of his energy into improving the piece. We were both extremely proud of the finished product, and it remains one of my favorite posters I’ve ever commissioned.
