Mob Psycho 100 is an anime that’s so singular in style, it’s hard to compare it to anything else. I’d long wanted to commission a Mob poster, but had difficulty finding an artist who I felt would be a good match for it. Not only did I want them to be able to do it justice; ideally they’d also be a fan.

Eventually, the work of Deb JJ Lee crossed my Instagram feed. Their command of color was immediately striking to me, as well as their flowing brushwork. Every piece they created was so intricate and exciting. I felt if anyone could capture the chaos of Mob Psycho, it would be them.

Deb did a few different concept sketches, this one being my favorite. It felt the most dynamic, and I thought it’d really pop off the wall. I also had faith that Deb would keep the finished artwork from devolving into unintelligibility, despite all the different elements at play.

The original color rough had a darker palette. I suggested something that felt more ‘day’, as I felt the lighthearted nature of the show would be better represented by bright values and unrestricted color. We went through many stages of fine-tuning on this one, but the result is undeniably kinetic.
