This was my second project with Rosemary. After Your Name, we were both interested in tackling more anime properties. So we decided to explore the influential work of anime director Satoshi Kon, starting with his debut psychological thriller: Perfect Blue.

This film already has it’s fair share of fan-art. If we were going to do a poster for it, I wanted it to be something completely unique. Rosemary fearlessly rose to the challenge, and delivered this concept. It perfectly captures the deep loneliness of these characters under the veil of horror.

Something interesting about making a poster for an anime is seeing how art styles converge: there’s the art style of the anime, there’s Rosemary’s style, and here, there’s something in between. It’s a very difficult balance to strike. Veering too far from the original hand-drawn designs of an anime can result in a jarring effect. I find it extremely impressive that Rosemary was able to reimagine the film so boldly, preserving its essence while giving it new life.
